A Father's Day appeal
You recently may have seen the ACLT appealing for Ethan, a 4-year-old who since 20 weeks gestation has had health complications with an obstruction in his urinary tract affecting his kidneys and potentially lungs.
To help with his chances of surviving a foetal surgery was performed at 21 weeks, the doctors had been prepared for the worst but with a miracle Ethan was born on the 13th of May 2020, kicking, screaming, and full of life.
From here Ethan spent 5 weeks at Great Ormond Street Hospital during lockdown – with the first 3 weeks in NICU. During this time, he was found to have a rare condition called prune belly syndrome, which affects 1 in 40, 000 babies and can cause chronic kidney disease.
A Father never expects when having a son that they would be calling out to the public on Father’s Day to find their son a kidney match. Here are a few words from Alasdair Wilson to you.
As you can see Ethan, is a bright and playful young boy despite his health complications. He enjoys reading, music, trains, and going down fast slides. Ethan has recently become a big brother and we want to make sure that he can have a fulfilled life carrying on his big brother duties.
As Ethan is blood type O and his mother Rachel is of Nigerian heritage this can make his wait longer, due to the low numbers of people of Black heritage registering to be organ donors. Ethan has now been on the deceased donor waiting list for 1 year and his parents, family, and friends have sadly been ruled out as potential candidates. We believe no one should die waiting for their donor match – that is why along with Ethan’s family we are appealing for potential living donors.
