Akanji Open Call Exhibition: Creating Beyond Sickle Cell
From the 3rd to the 5th of May, Akanji Studios will host an exhibition to help raise awareness of Sickle Cell. More than just art, the movement will host art created by people living with Sickle Cell.
As of January 2024, in England, around 17,000 people are living with sickle cell disorder, with 250 new cases a year. The disorder can result in severe organ damage and intense pain if damaged red blood cells block vessels and restrict oxygen supply – it is more common in people of Black African and Caribbean heritage.
This puts into perspective why a movement like this is important and why the ACLT as an organisation is standing. We work towards diversifying donor registers so that we can give hope and gift life to those looking for their donor match. You can find out more, about stem cell (bone marrow) donation – here.
“Founded in December 2023, Akanji Studio is a platform raising awareness about sickle cell through art, poetry and storytelling. Since its inception, Akanji has touched the lives of thousands.
Building on the impact of Akanji’s work, we’re hosting a three-day exhibition showcasing the incredible work and talents of those living with sickle cell, whilst raising awareness amongst those in the wider society.” – Akanji Studio
