Derek, aged 43
I had recently got out of a six-year relationship and decided I needed to put myself back out there. I wasn’t on the hunt for a girlfriend, I just wanted some harmless flirting and fun…
You see the thing that’s holding me back from committing is that dreaded L word, I know what your thinking a young man who has been hurt in the past and is now scared of commitment, it’s not that simple I wish it was.
Again! It’s just that dreaded L word – It’s not LOVE I don’t fear that! It’s not LUST I certainly don’t fear that! It’s is LEUKAEMIA, I have Chronic Lymphocytic leukaemia and it’s probably the only thing I fear in this world.
I bet your thinking what is CLL?? – CLL is a type of cancer in which the bone marrow makes too many lymphocytes and even with the treatment I have to control my condition, it unfortunately cannot be cured.
“SO… I DON’T WANT ANYTHING SERIOUS, I DON’T WANT SOMEONE TO FEEL THE PAIN I DO, I DON’T WANT THEM TO LOSE FRIENDS LIKE I HAVE”
I wish I could be like my parents who have been together for 27 years, I wish I could have what they have. For now I will settle for harmless flirting and fun…

Tia, 27 years old:
Tia: OMG!! He is soooo fine, I had to swipe right it was a given. Michelle he better swipe right I know this man is supposed to be my husband.
Michelle: Tia your lucky you’re my best friend, I should have cut you off a long time ago. This goes against my feminist beliefs and my views on marriage reform.
Tia: Before you go off on a tangent, let me bring you back to my husband and the other prospects I have swiped right on as I need to have backup plans.
* They both explode in fits of laughter*
Tia: Mich, Goodnight I’ve got work in the morning I’m going to sleep.
Michelle: Night TT I’m not tired yet, I’ll send you over some videos on women’s rights…
*Tia’s phone buzzes at 02:03 am thinking it’s Michelle sending her TikTok videos.*
*A notification pops up “Somebody likes you open the app and see who” Tia calls Michelle*
Tia: “Mich, Mr soooo fine has written me a message it says “Hi my name is Lavon, you have a beautiful smile. It would be nice to get to know you more.”
*6 weeks pass and Tia and Lavon have been speaking frequently and decide to go on a date*
Lavon: Tia, you look beautiful just as stunning as your pictures.
Tia: I could say the same for you.
*Tia and Lavon have an amazing date, and the night is coming to a close.*
Tia: I’m sorry I have to leave early, I have a hospital appointment in the morning
Lavon: How come you have to go hospital
Tia: Well… I have sickle cell and I have to have a blood transfusion.
Lavon: I have sickle cell trait…

Josh, aged 34
‘I love him with all my heart, he’s the part of me that I will always need.
We have everything in common, we do date nights 3-5 times a week, we play sports together, we travel every 3 months, WE LOVE TRAVELLING! He brought the extrovert side out of me and I love his positive, energetic and spontaneous spirit.
So please tell me how I explain our world is going to be turned upside down! How do I tell the man I fell in love with 12 months ago that my kidney is failing and our lives are going to change?
My Renal Consultant has let me know I will be on dialysis 3 times-a-week and travelling will be out of the question.
There is nothing I can possibly do but break-up with him, I don’t want him to lose himself in this dreadful disease.’
