Bev and Orin talk to Rad Chat - Oncology podcast
We are thrilled to share a deeply moving and inspiring episode of Rad Chat, a leading oncology podcast hosted by therapeutic radiographers Naman Julka-Anderson and Jo McNamara. This episode, features our founders Beverley De-Gale OBE and Orin Lewis OBE, recounting the journey that led to the creation of the African Caribbean Leukaemia Trust (ACLT) following their son Daniel’s courageous battle with blood cancer.
In 1996, Daniel was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, a moment that forever changed our lives. Determined to find a donor match for Daniel, we discovered a critical lack of awareness and representation of African and Caribbean communities in the stem cell register. This realisation drove us to establish ACLT, a charity focused on raising awareness, registering donors, and supporting patients and families affected by blood disorders.

During the episode, Beverley and Orin discuss the challenges they faced and the triumphs they achieved. Beverley shares, “Our mission has always been to provide hope and a better chance of survival for patients from our communities.” Orin adds, “By increasing the number of African and Caribbean donors, we can save lives and ensure that no family has to go through what we did.”
ACLT’s impact has been profound, from significantly increasing donor registrations to providing invaluable support to patients and families. Our work has not only saved lives but also brought communities together in the fight against blood cancer.
We invite you to listen to this heartfelt episode and learn more about the importance of stem cell donation and how you can get involved. Your support can make a life-saving difference.
