A Journey of Hope: Obi Busia's Story
Meet Obi Busia, a 67-year-old with an inspiring story of resilience and hope. Diagnosed with kidney disease, he fought hard by managing his health, but despite his efforts, he faced end-stage kidney failure.
He began dialysis, first with Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD), a daunting daily routine, and later switching to haemodialysis, requiring frequent trips to the dialysis centre, 3-5 times a week.
Obi described his diagnosis as “receiving a death sentence.” He faced depression, heartbreak, and even suicidal thoughts. Yet, he remained steadfast in his fight, hoping for a kidney transplant.
Obi underwent countless tests to qualify for the transplant waiting list. After two years, he was placed on it, but another hurdle arose – his donor from Ghana was denied a visa to the UK. Obi is currently working with his local MP to challenge this decision by the Home Office.
It is disheartening to know that there is a match out there for him, but that will not stop us from trying to find a potential new match. A donor match can come from anywhere in the world, so diversifying our donor registers is something that we promise to do so that no matter where they are, we will find them.
Obi's message to you...
“I’ve faced the darkest moments of my life, but I still hold on to hope. Every day I dream of the chance for a new life, a life that could come from the generosity of someone like you. Please, consider becoming an organ donor. Your choice could save my life and the lives of so many others in need.”
How can I make a difference?
Talk to your friends and family about kidney disease and the lifesaving power of organ donation. We understand that there can be a lot of questions and misconceptions revolved around organ donation.
You may never have to donate your kidney, unless you are found to be a match for someone. But being part of that register means that one day you could potentially save a life, giving someone like Obeng a second chance to live a life-time.
