ACLT announces One Drop Saturdays
"This selfless act can help provide life-saving transfusions to sickle cell patients, as well as for use in emergencies, childbirth, during surgery and in cancer treatments."
Mark Chambers, NHSBT Director of Donor Experience
ACLT has teamed up with the Brixton Blood Donor Centre to bring you One Drop Saturdays a powerful new initiative inviting our community to turn a simple act into a lifesaving legacy.
We’re calling on you to be part of something bigger: donating blood to help save lives, right in the heart of Brixton.
Taking place every last Saturday of the month, this isn’t just about giving blood it’s about giving hope. With every drop, you’re supporting patients in urgent need, especially those from Black and ethnically diverse communities where a donor match is vital but often harder to find.

Every last Saturday of the month at Brixton blood donor centre.
This particular blood donor centre is important as it plays a significant role in attracting diverse donors. NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) data shows that this centre has exceeded the rest of the country by attracting 7% of donors with the rare Ro blood type. Donor diversity is important as it ensures that patients of all ethnicities receive the best-matched blood, minimising adverse reactions.
Having the centre strategically placed in Brixton makes it easier for communities to access. As a result, since its opening in January, more than 11,000 lives have been saved and 10% of donors are of Black heritage – almost three times the national average of 3%.
Increasing the number of Black heritage blood donors is an urgent priority for NHS Blood and Transplant, as Black heritage donors are 10 times more likely to have the Ro subtype, which directly supports the sickle cell community. Sickle cell is a blood disorder mostly prevalent in people of Black African, Caribbean, and mixed backgrounds.
Turn your Saturday into something extraordinary. Bring a friend, spread the word, and be part of a growing community of lifesavers. One donation. One afternoon. One drop that could change everything.
Make this act of selflessness your friendship groups evening social. These groups could be running clubs, wellness groups, corporate teams, families, book clubs and more.
