Silent Crisis: Abraham’s Journey
Living with Strength
Hi, I’m Abraham Thomas. I’ve always found comfort in the simple joys of life, listening to music and playing games. These are more than just hobbies to me; they’re ways I stay grounded and maintain a positive mindset. As an introvert, I enjoy solitude and value my time alone, just chilling and recharging. Social groups and online forums aren’t really my thing, but that doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy going out occasionally and having fun with my friends. Balance is important.
I can’t pinpoint the exact moment I started feeling unwell, mainly because I was born with my condition. But from the time I became aware of what was happening, I’ve taken steps to protect myself. That includes things like keeping myself warm, staying covered properly, taking my medications consistently, and learning how to manage my health day by day.
It’s been a journey, one filled with learning, adapting, and growing stronger. I’ve had great support along the way from my family, friends, and healthcare team, all of whom have played a major role in helping me live as healthily and fully as I can.
Living with sickle cell isn’t easy. It’s a daily challenge, one that requires resilience, awareness, and strength.
Managing My Condition
My medical condition, sickle cell, is currently stable. I receive treatment at the Haematology department at Guy’s and St Thomas’s Hospital, where I attend regular check-ups. These appointments are essential; they help detect and manage complications early and make sure everything stays on track.
My treatment plan includes medication and lifestyle adjustments to help prevent crises and maintain overall health. It’s not always easy, but it’s effective, and I stick to it because I know how important it is for my well-being.
Family: My Greatest Support System
I live with my mum and two sisters, and we’re a very close-knit family. My mum, especially, has been a rock during my medical journey, always making sure I have what I need, emotionally and physically. My sisters are equally caring and supportive. We’re in this together, and I’m deeply grateful for their love and strength.
Hope for the Future
Living with sickle cell isn’t easy. It’s a daily challenge, one that requires resilience, awareness, and strength. But with every challenge comes an opportunity to grow, to share, and to inspire. I remain hopeful that as awareness continues to grow, so too will access to better treatment options and support systems.
