Silent Crisis: Tyrae’s Story
A Young Actor and Sickle Cell Warrior at the Heart of the 'Silent Crisis'
As part of ACLT’s Silent Crisis campaign, we’re shining a light on the real people behind the statistics like 9-year-old Tyrae, a bright, talented boy who loves football, maths, and performing as a professional actor. But behind his infectious smile and creative energy lies a daily fight against sickle cell anaemia the UK’s fastest-growing genetic condition, and one that disproportionately affects people from Black and mixed-heritage backgrounds.
Diagnosed as a newborn through the routine heel prick test, Tyrae has bravely faced the challenges of sickle cell since day one. Though he’s had relatively few pain crises, he experienced two small strokes as a toddler. In response, doctors performed revascularisation surgery to help redirect blood flow through the narrow vessels in his brain.
“Tyrae is a strong, beautiful sickle cell warrior who can do anything he puts his mind to. He is talented, brave and inspirational. Sickle cell doesn’t stop him he shines in everything he does.”
To prevent further strokes and stay well, Tyrae now receives monthly blood transfusions, made possible only through the generosity of regular blood donors especially those from Black communities, whose blood type is often a better match for patients like Tyrae.
“Having monthly blood transfusions keeps Tyrae out of hospital and protects him from dangerous sickle cell crises,” says his mum. “We’re so grateful to every single donor. Without them, our son wouldn’t be able to live the active life he loves.”
The condition also runs through Tyrae’s family his older brother Kyrelle also lives with sickle cell anaemia, and his younger brother Bryson carries the Sickle Cell trait. Together, they support each other with strength, love, and courage. Despite the challenges, Tyrae continues to thrive. Whether on stage, in school, or playing with friends, he refuses to let his condition define him.
While the family has considered a bone marrow transplant, Tyrae is currently stable and doing well on his transfusion regimen. But his story is a reminder that behind every statistic is a child, a family, and a future that depends on lifesaving donors.
Tyrae’s story echoes what the Silent Crisis campaign highlights: while progress has been made, there is still a critical shortage of Black and mixed-heritage donors.
